Benjamin B. McAlpin III ’51

Ben was born May 3, 1929, in New York, the son of B.B. McAlpin Jr. ’21 and Alberta McKay McAlpin.

He attended Greenwich Country Day School and prepared at Exeter. At Princeton he majored in economics, was in ROTC and Ivy, played JV football and ran track, and roomed with Lou Pemberton and John Wiseman. Nominally a first lieutenant in the airborne infantry, he served with the CIA in Korea until 1954.

During his business career, Ben worked for several financial institutions including J.P. Morgan, Bache, Hayden Stone, Moseley, H.N. Whitney, and Goadby. At 50 he earned an M.B.A. at NYU and then finished his business career as an account executive at AT&T. Ben retired in 1993 to pursue scripture studies at Union Theological Seminary. He was a member of the Greenwich Field Club, the Knickerbocker Club, the Society of Mayflower Descendants, the Society of the Cincinnati, and the Sons of the Revolution.

Ben’s wife, Jean Gerst McAlpin, predeceased him in 2002. Ben died Sept. 10, 2010, after a long illness. He is survived by his nephews, Richard and Bruce Cryan; and his cousins David H. McAlpin Jr. ’50, Charles N. McAlpin ’69, and Charles N. McAlpin Jr. ’05.
