Benjamin H. Belknap *54

Body

Benjamin Belknap, distinguished professor on the medical faculty of the Univ. of Washington, died Jan. 21, 1994. He earned his undergraduate degree at Oberlin College (Ohio) and got his M.P.A. at the Woodrow Wilson School before getting his M.D. at the Univ. of Rochester (N .Y.) Medical School. From there, he went to Seattle to serve his internship in the hospitals of the Univ. of Washington Medical School.

On completion of his internship, he relocated and taught at the Marquette School of Medicine in Milwaukee until 1971, when he returned to Seattle and U.W. as associate professor of medicine and medical director of the medical center. He served also as chief of staff at Seattle Veterans Administration Medical Center.

In addition to his professional expertise, Benjamin had an unusual faculty for developing a rapport with his patients, students, and colleagues alike. He was also an ardent advocate for minorities and disadvantaged students.

He is survived by his widow; his son Robert; his brother Elston, M.D.; a nephew; and two nieces. To all those who counted him dear, we extend sincere sympathy.
