Bruce died Oct. 26, 2020, of cancer at his home in Charlottesville, Va.

Born in Burlington, Vt., in 1943, he was educated in public schools there and spent his senior year in Rome at the Liceo Ginnasio Statale “Giuglio Cesare” as an exchange student. Bruce received a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Cornell in 1966 and a master’s degree from Princeton in 1971.

In the Peace Corps from 1966 to 1969, he restored and documented mosques in Tunisia for the National Institute of Art and Archaeology.

His professional experience included posts with Dan Kiley, Michael Graves, and GBQC architects. In 1974 Bruce entered academia at the University of Virginia, becoming chair of the department of architecture and associate dean.

Between 1990 and 2016 he was on the faculty of the Syracuse University School of Architecture, serving for 12 years as dean. In Italy he taught architecture in Vicenza, Venice, and Florence. A registered architect and GSA peer professional, he maintained a small professional architectural practice.

Bruce is survived by his wife, Linda Rowe Abbey; son Jason James Abbey; daughter-in-law Sally Abbey; granddaughter Emily Spencer Abbey; and sister Faith Nichols Abbey.
