C. Robert Devine ’38

BOB DEVINE died of prostate cancer Jan. 6, 1990. Before retirement, he was V.P. of the Reader's Digest Assn., in charge of public affairs and the considerable good works of the DIGEST and the Wallace family.

Born in Clarksburg, W.Va., he prepared at Pelham Memorial School. He majored in English, was business manager of the PRINCE and on the Class Memorial Com¬mittee. He joined Cannon.

Bob served in the campaigns of Central Europe and the Rhineland in the airborne infantry, rising from pri¬vate to major. After the war he rejoined U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORTs advertising department. In 1955 he went to READER'S DIGEST and held various positions in its international division. He served as chairman of the In¬ternational Federation of the Periodical Press.

His talent for raising money for worthy causes was used by many organizations, among them American Univ. in Cairo, the American Hospital in Istanbul, the Vail-Deane School in New Jersey, the Met, and the Police Athletic League. He was awarded our Class Distin¬guished Service Award in 1981 and an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ. in 1976.

Bob leaves his wife, Gisele and three children, sons Rodney and Ian of N.Y.C. and daughter Mallory D. Nor¬ris from his first marriage to Louise Williams. They have our sincere condolences.
