C. Waggaman Bed Jr. ’47

Body

Bitsy died suddenly of acute pulmonary edema on Father's Day, June 18, 1989. All ten of his children were home that day, and he had celebrated our 42nd reunion with us just two weeks earlier.

Bitsy lived and worked in Wilmington, Del., all his life. He joined our class from the Wilmington Friends School in July 1943 as a member of the Marine V-12 detachment. Sixteen months later, he left for active duty with the Marine Corps. He returned after the war and received his degree in 1947. Recalled to duty during the Korean War, he was discharged as a captain.

Bitsy received a law degree from the Univ. of Virginia and had a successful practice, specializing in medical malpractice. He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. Bitsy had close Princeton ties, including his father, Charles W. Berl '17; his uncle, Ennalls Berl '12; and his brother, Henry '46. He and his wife, Barbara, attended many reunions and mini-reunions. In addition to Barbara, Bitsy is survived by his children (including Charles W. III, our Class Baby), his sister, and ten grandchildren. He is also survived by his first wife, the former Lois Naylor. He was interred at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.

Bitsy loved life and was a constant source of joy and inspiration. His winning smile, contagious laugh, and keen sense of humor will be sorely missed. To each member of his family we extend our deepest sympathy.
