Calvin M. Hotchkiss ’43
Cal died on Oct. 21, 1988, at the age of 67. Born in Rochester, N.Y., he entered Princeton in 1939 and graduated with a B.A. in modern languages. He also took engineering and premed courses and was a member of the Chapel Choir, Theatre Intime, and Triangle Club.
After his discharge from the U.S. Army in 1944, Cal embarked on a varied career that was always interesting: Pan American and American airlines, Eastman Kodak, and General Foods (where as chief flavor chemist he invented raspberry Jello). In 1948, he returned to Eastman, for which he worked until he retired in 1986. Along the way, Cal picked up his master's degree from the Univ. of Rochester. He also served for many years as chairman of the board of editors of the SMPTE Journal, the publication of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers.
Cal's many hobbies included skiing, sailing, tennis, and gardening. One of his chief claims to fame was living in Philadelphia and working in N.Y.C., to which he commuted every day for 38 years.
Cal is survived by three daughters, Meg, Elizabeth, and Alice. To them all we offer our deepest and most heartfelt condolences.
