CARTER HEWITT died Mar. 20, 1992, in Saint Francis Medical Center, Peoria, Ill., twelve days after an automobile accident. Carter was driving alone, after visiting his wife, Veronica, who has been confined to a healthcare center since 1989, when his car was struck by a van at an intersection. He never recovered full consciousness.
Carter was born in Peoria and went to Peoria H.S. At Princeton he majored in architecture and was a member of Cloister Inn. He went on to graduate school at Princeton, and earned an M.F.A. degree in 1931. He married Veronica Flinn on Sept. 19, 1931. A daughter Pamela died two years ago. He is survived by a son Peter Edmund, a daughter Helen Morgan Papas, seven grandchildren, and five greatgrandchildren.
HewittBastian was formed as an architectural firm in Peoria in 1936. During WWII Carter was a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and was stationed in both the South Pacific and Berlin. After the war he continued with his firm, until lie retired in 1968. He was then engaged in projects for both the states of Illinois and Wisconsin, He and Veronica were in Ojai, Calif., from 1975 to 1978, before returning to a 68acre estate of beautiful timberland near Washington, Ill., a suburb of Peoria. He was very active in the founding and development of Illinois Central College and served on its board of trustees. He was an active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Peoria.
Carter kept in close touch with Princeton, attended Class reunions, and donated valuable books in French to the University library. He will be remembered with gratitude for his optimistic view of life and his characteristic fresh ideas and energy. The sympathy of the Class is with Veronica, Peter, Morgan, and their families.
