Chambless R. Johnston ’51

Body

Cham died of liver cancer July 2, 1994, at daughter Dede Johnston Wright's home, in Nashville. He had retired from surgical practice and lived in Tucson. He came to Princeton from Webb School in Bell Buckle, Tenn., and became a prominent member of our class. He majored in biology; roomed with Hal Urschcl, Hollie Donan, and Will Hamilton; and belonged to Tiger Inn. It was, however, as an outstanding fencer that most of us remember him. He won first place in the Natl. Intercollegiate Saber Championship and was named Fencer of the Year. Cham was a 1955 graduate of Vanderbilt's School of Medicine and was a doctor in the Army for two years. In addition to his involvement in many medical organizations, he was active in the Boy Scouts, receiving the Silver Beaver Award. He was an avid outdoorsman and a noted authority on African wildlife. Cham's wife, Anita, died in 1982. His father, Gale '24, died in I 970. He is survived by daughters Dede and Rita, sons Chambliss E. Jr. and William, brothers Gale '49 and Norfleet '56, and 11 grandchildren. We send our deep regrets to all of them.
