Charles Albert Woods Jr. ’25

OUR CLASSMATE, "QUIZZER" Woods, for whom the name was symbolic through school and college days, died peacefully in his sleep at his Harrisburg home, Mar. 6, 1993. Some years ago he suffered a stroke, restricting him to a wheelchair, but from his hilltop terrace he could overlook the broad Susquehanna River Valley and Harrisburg. A graduate of Sewickley Academy, and the Hill School, Pottstown, Penn., he entered with Princeton's Class of 1925; he graduated from Harvard Law School in 1928 following in the footsteps of his father (Princeton 1900)~ His grandfather, George Woods, L.L.D., had been the chancellor of the Univ. of Pittsburgh. Quizzer was born to be a lawyer, as his later career proved.

In 1946, he married Elizabeth Gilbert, of Winchester, Mass., and shortly thereafter the couple adopted three childrentwins Deborah and Carol and a boy, Christophera readymade family, and all at one time.

Graduating with a Princeton ROTC 2nd Lieutenant's rank, Quizzer entered the provost general's office, was commissioned a captain in 1943, and became a major a year later as staff supervisor of counterintelligence. After the War, he held membership in three law firms in Pittsburgh, while serving as assistant professor of law at the Univ. of Pittsburgh for seven years and adjunct professor for four more years. Later, he moved his family to Harrisburg, where he was appointed deputy attorney general for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. As a member of the American Bar Assn., he wrote many papers, and delivered countless addresses, serving as chairman of the Committee on Probate and Estate Administration. With all the above, and much more, he even found time to serve as the mayor of Sewickley for ten years; and he was chairman of the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh and of the Music Committee of the Sewickley Presbyterian Church.
