Charles Bishop Lascelles ’40

Body

CHARLIE DIED JUNE 21, 1991, in Buffalo, N.Y., losing out to throat cancer. He submitted a 50th year book contribution but did not attend the reunion. Entering Princeton from Georgetown Prep, Charlie graduated with honors in art and archaeology and joined Cloister Inn. He then went on to Princeton Graduate School, until entering the forces, in 1942, to serve in India and China.

In the early postwar years Charlie worked for the U.S. Army in Germany and enlarged his appreciation for European art and architecture, also pursuing skiing and climbing in the Bavarian Alps. Upon returning home he went into investment banking and later became an adjunct professor at SUNYBuffalo's School of Architecture, traveling abroad whenever he could. He was a member of Buffalo's Saturn Club and the Pack Club and had been active in the Western N.Y. Princeton Club.

Charlie's engaging personality and laconic wit were valued by many, and he was a popular "extra man about town." During his illness he demonstrated courage in the face of insurmountable odds. He never complained and never alluded to his health. He lived and died bravely. Charlie was unmarried. His sister Alice Lascelles Collins survives him. The Class sends her sincere sympathy and condolences.
