Charles Burton Whitehouse ’46
CHARLES BURTON WHITEHOUSE, or 'Burt' as he was known to his friends, died Dec. 16, 1991, at his home in North Caldwell, N.J. Burt entered Princeton in 1942 and left for the Navy in December of that year. He served at a number of Navy installations and returned to the campus in 1946, completing a degree in electrical engineering in 1950.
Burt was a selfemployed electrical engineer throughout his professional life, the last 30 years of which were spent in North Caldwell. Burt was a dedicated member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he served for many years as a deacon. He was also a leader of the West Essex Regional School Board, where he was known as an indefatigable negotiator for better school conditions. He served as president of the school board from 1978 to 1980 and again in 1991. All five of his children attended West Essex, where Burt's love for music led him to become the major adviser to the music department. The school board chairman described Burt as "a man of integrity and character with strong faith and close family ties."
Burt leaves his widow, Doris; three sons, William, Robert, and David; a daughter, Marsha Lee Shull; his father, Charles E. '15; three sisters; and five grandchildren. The Class sends its sympathy to all of Burt's family. We will miss this loyal classmate and friend.
