Charles C. Fitzmorris ’33

Body

Charlie Fitzmorris died Mar. 17, 1995, after a long battle with multiple myeloma. He had been active, busy, and full of enthusiasm right to the end.

He grew up in Chicago and prepared at Lawrenceville. At Princeton, he was business manager of the Princetonian, a member of Charter, and a member of Triangle Club. In later years, he served as an advisory council member of the computer science board and was a major benefactor of the university.

Charlie began his grocery career unloading produce from freight cars for the A&P Tea Co. He commanded an artillery battery in WWII across Europe. Then he went into the advertising business and by the time of our 20th reunion, he headed his own agency. In the 1960s, he and associates purchased the Benner Tea Co., a chain of supermarkets.

He developed computer systems for grocery management and later sold his interest in Benner to develop World Wide Chain Store Systems, a software company specializing in food management. In recent years, he had developed a brokerage for food in Russia and Japan and had a fling at importing alpacas from South America.

After the war, Charlie married Isabel Scott Keep, sister of classmate Freddy Scott. She died in 1969. Charlie is survived by her children, Alice Carlson, Linesay Griffith, Sandra Notz, and Scott Keep; by seven grandchildren; and by three great-grandchildren. His was a long, full, useful, and happy life.
