Charles D. Richardson Jr. ’53

Body

CHARLIE RICHARDSON, who died July 30, 1994, was a member of Woodberry Forest's seven-man southern contingent of Charlie Barham, Will Gregg, Tom Helm, George Ives, Ned Slaughter, and Buddy Syer, who entered Princeton in 1949. Charlie began as an engineer but switched to liberal arts and received his A.B. in history, He ran track for four years and was in Cap & Gown Club.

At Stanford, Charlie got his master's in business. Next, he got his gold ensign's bars at the naval O.C.S. in Newport. When he was discharged, Charlie worked for a paper-converting concern in his hometown, Memphis. He was transferred to California before returning to Memphis to head the Southern Central Co.

Later, Charlie moved to Dayton, Ohio, to join Mead Corp. Last year, Ashley, Charlie and wife Gloria Bagwell's daughter, was married. Ned Slaughter said he wished he could have attended, because Don Harris, Charlie's roommate senior year, said Charlie gave the wedding of the century.

With his rapid-fire wit and friendly manner, Charlie was always good company. He took great delight in Gloria and Ashley. With them, we grieve this tragic loss.
