Ned Test died Nov. 15, 2011, in Indianapolis.

He attended Park School in Indianapolis before coming to Princeton, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa with honors in biology. After Princeton he graduated from the medical school of the University of Chicago. At the end of his internship at Indiana University School of Medicine Hospital, he joined the Army Medical Corps and served mainly in the South Pacific, ending his Army career as a major.

Ned opened an internal-medicine practice in Indianapolis. He served as president of the medical staffs of Marion County (Ind.) General Hospital and St. Vincent Hospital. He was chief of medicine at Marion County General Hospital for 10 years. He retired in 1988.

Ned was an enthusiastic fisherman, spending summers in Westport Harbor, Mass. After his retirement he was an active philanthropist, especially in conservation, education, and arts. He was a life trustee of the Nature Conservancy of Indiana and a director of the Indianapolis Symphony.

Ned is survived by his children from two marriages. He was married to Judith Chambers, who died in 1954. They had one daughter, Deborah Test Rempis, and a son, Samuel T. Test. In 1955 he married Sarah Chase Davol, who died Nov. 19, 2011. They had two children, Charles D. Test and Abigail B. Test. He also is survived by his grandchildren, Alexander and David Rempis.
