CHARLES ERNEST BIRCHENALL, at the age of 70, dean emeritus of the Graduate School and Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Metallurgy at the Univ. of Delaware, died May 23, 1992. He earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry at Temple Univ. in 1943, and a master's degree and a doctorate in chemistry at Princeton in 1945 and 1946, respectively. At Princeton he also worked as a research assistant on the Manhattan District Program and in the chemical engineering department. From Princeton, he went to Carnegie Institute of Technology as a research assistant in the Metals Research Laboratory. At Carnegie Tech., he taught and supervised student research in physical metallurgy. Beginning in 1946, he had also been professionally engaged in research on government contracts. In 1952, he came back to Princeton as associate professor of chemistry for the metallurgy project (now the Plasma Physics Laboratory). In 1960, he went to the Univ. of Delaware, where he rose to the positions occupied at his death. He is survived by his widow, Jane, and one son. To his family and friends we extend sincere condolences.
