Charles Gillett McKendree ’38
CHARLES G. McKENDREE, M.D., a native of New York City and a resident of Greenwich, Conn., for 40 years, died Oct. 19, 1991, at Greenwich Hospital. He had been Physician Emeritus in neurology since his retirement in 1985.
Charlie was one of seven who came from Choate School. At Princeton he roomed with Ken Muir for three years and Jim Saalfield senior year, He belonged to Cottage Club and was a member of the varsity crew, Glee Club, and the premedical society.
He went on to the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia and the Univ. of Virginia Medical School. He interned at St. Luke's Hospital in NYC. until Jan. 1944, when he joined the Navy. As ship's doctor aboard the U.S.S, MACKENSIE he served in the Mediterranean and European theaters.
In 1944, he married Carolyn Doll, an R.N. from St. Luke's. They had a daughter Whitney and sons Charles and William, all of whom have inherited his love of things nautical. As both father and physician, Charlie was known for his strength of character and as a "character." His extradry wit and powerful presence will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
