Charles Harbaugh Moore ’31

Body

Charles had been sidelined by heart problems for some years, but was granted a peaceful end at his home in Pittsburgh on Sept 20, 1989.

Few classmates had closer ties to Princeton than Charlie. He was the son of Hubert Moore '05; other relatives include K. Hall '93, S. H. Moore '98, and brothers H. Moore Jr. '29, M. H. Moore '32, and Peter Moore '38.

Charlie prepared for Princeton at Kent School where he developed the interest in crew that he successfully engaged in at college. He was one of the first recipients of the Edgar Palmer Scholarship, which funded him to experience European culture for a year. Upon his return he successfully taught Latin and algebra, was field boss on a truck farm and a packing house manager, and filled a variety of industrial relations assignments before becoming director of personnel for U.S. Steel.

Charlie gave unstintingly of himself in service to the Class and his community. He was our class agent for Annual Giving for five years. At various times through the years he served as director of the Pittsburgh Personnel Association, Psychological Services of Pittsburgh, the Parental Stress Center, Urban League, Smug Hollow Land Corp., Pittsburgh Plan for Art, and the Chamber Music Society. He was also active in Junta and, reportedly, had been learning New Testament and Classical Greek.

The successive deaths of three children with Wilson's Disease and the loss of two of his brothers were tragedies he had to bear. With his surviving widow, Helen, and brother, Peter '38, we share the memory of a respected friend of warm and gentle spirit.
