Charles Reed Manning VI ’34

CHUCK REED, a descendant of a prominent shipbuilding family in Erie, Penn., died there July 23, 1993. He retired in 1960, when the Erie investment brokerage in which he was a partner was sold. He maintained homes in Erie and Hyde Park, Vt., where he spent summers. He, Howie Engler, the late Art Jones, their wives, and other parttime Vermonters reuned there every summer.

Before returning to his native Erie in 1948, to establish the brokerage with a childhood friend, Chuck was chief engineer with Haden Mfg. Co. in Bristol, Conn., which he joined in 1938. In WWII, he served as an army ordnance officer at the Ballistics Research Center in Aberdeen, Md.

He was the regional chairman for Annual Giving in Erie in 197677. He served the local chapter of the American Red Cross for 30 years in a variety of positions, including chairman and director. He was also a director of the Erie County Health and Tuberculosis Assn.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Anne (Donovan); a son; two daughters; and six grandchildren. To them, we offer our sincere sympathies.
