Charles Theodore Tench *32

CHARLES TENCH, retired army colonel and Princeton civil engineer, died July 24, 1989. We regret the delay in publication of this tribute to a distinguished American.

Born in Plainfield, N.J., in 1905, he graduated from South Side H.S. in Newark. Charles attended West Point and received his bachelor's degree there in 1929. In 1932, he was awarded a master's degree in civil engineering at Princeton.

He then served at Fort du Pont and at Fort Belvoir in Virginia. The next two years were spent in the Panama Canal Zone and another two years at Huntington, WVa., supervising construction of flood control walls along the Ohio River. In 1939, he rejoined the troops and was sent to the Asian theater in WWII. Charles was selected by General Douglas MacArthur to head the advance party landing in Tokyo at the end of the war to prepare for General MacArthur's arrival there. Mrs. Tench predeceased her husband. She has a surviving son by a previous marriage, William Hahn. To William and his family we extend our sympathy in the loss of William's distinguished stepfather.
