Charles W. Crupi *67

Crupi graduated from Harvard in 1961, received a master’s degree from UC, Berkeley in 1963, and then earned a Ph.D. in English from Princeton in 1967. From 1968 to 1974, he was an assistant professor at Princeton. Then he went to Albion, from which he retired in 2009 after teaching for 35 years.

At Albion, Crupi taught Shakespeare and Renaissance literature, and directed plays. A very popular instructor, he was also chair of the English department for 19 years. Albion’s president Donna Randall said she “saw how much he meant to his colleagues and students. He was passionate about teaching and dedicated to the development of his students.”

Crupi wrote plays about H.L. Mencken, Ring Lardner, and Dorothy Parker, and authored a book on Elizabethan playwright Robert Greene. He served on many faculty committees, and at the request of students, helped establish Albion’s women’s softball team, coaching its first three seasons.

Crupi is survived by his wife, Tamara, and their three children.
