Charles W. Metter ’47

Body

CHARLIE MEFTER (who was known as Bill to his family) died of heart failure at his home in Princeton Jan. 28, 1994.

A native of Philadelphia, he entered the navy R.O.T.C. program at Stevens Institute during WWII, after serving with the Seabees. From Stevens, he transferred to Princeton in 1 945. After getting his degree in mechanical engineering, he married the former Helen Denney. Charlie then studied for his M.S., which he got in 1949.

Charlie's first post after receiving his graduate degree was with the Fischer & Porter Co. in Hatboro, Penn. He then joined Thomas A. Edison, Inc., which later became McGraw Edison. In 1969, he was made a corporate v.p. of the company. After eight years in that position, he left to do management consulting. In 1980, he moved to Chicago as president and C.E.O. of the Chicago Milwaukee Corp., a holding company with five subsidiaries. He retired in 1985.

After his retirement, he and Helen decided to move back to Princeton, where he relished the chance to assist in class affairs, ran four of our offyear reunions, and served as our class treasurer.

What we will always remember and will miss most about Charlie are not his accomplishments in life, impressive though they were, but his warmth and modesty, his genuineness, his optimism and good humor, and his great love of his family.

To Helen, his sons Charles Jr. and Robert, and his daughter Laura, the class offers its most heartfelt condolences.
