Charles William Schlaitzer ’23
CHARLES WAS born May 22, 1901, and entered Princeton from Erasmus H.S. in Brooklyn. At Princeton, he was involved in water polo, tennis, golf, and Whig Society. He was at case with Germanboth reading and speakingand was an active member of the Class of '23 for three years, prior to his transfer to New York Univ., where he pursued special courses in accounting, banking, and finance.
No member of the Class of 1923 had a more interesting or varied career. Charles worked for the Sinclair Refining Company before taking a position with Paul Plunket and Co., a position later canceled during the Wall Street panic of 1929. He continued on Wall Street, however, with Herrick Berg and Co., until 1932, when, with a partner, Charles bought a wholesale coffee business. Fire later destroyed the company's building, equipment, and supplies, bringing an end to the business. Charles then secured a post with the U.S. government as assistant director of finance. When the bureau was moved to Washington, D.C., our classmate became affiliated with the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., and then with the Armstrong Cork Co., from which he retired in 1963.
Charles's first wife, Clare, died in 1929, soon after giving birth to twin daughters: Janet, now a practicing psychologist, and Joan, a legal assistant. A second marriage ended in divorce. In 1954, Charles and Ethel were married. They retired to Miami in 1963.
Charles left out ranks on Dec. 6, 1991. He died having lived a full life, one in which his family takes great pride. He is survived by Ethel, his wife of 37 years; Janet and Joan; 12 grandchildren; and 11 greatgrandchildren. The Class of'23 is proud to claim Charles as one of our own.
