Charlie James ’27

Body

CHARLIE JAMES DIED in his native Milwaukee May 4, 1994. He had suffered a stroke and had been ill for several years. He came to Princeton from Andover, was captain of the varsity soccer team, and was a member of Quadrangle Club.

After graduation, he worked for Northwestern Natl. Insurance Co., becoming its president in 1939 and serving until 1970. He was also president and later chairman of the N.N. Corp., a division of Armco (which included Northwestern and five other insurance and financial companies), until his retirement in 1975. Since 1970, he had been one of the owners of the Milwaukee Brewers. His civic activities were extensive and are detailed in the June 1, 1994 issue of PAW.

Charlie married Grace Velie in 1928. She died in 1992. His survivors include four sons, Alfred III, Charles V '53, David F., and Douglas '62; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. To them, the class extends deep sympathy in the loss of one of its nationally prominent members.
