Body

CLARENCE DICKINSON LONG JR., a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for 22 years from Maryland's 2nd District, died Sept. 18, 1994. He was born in South Bend, Ind. He got his bachelor's from Washington and Jefferson College (Penn.) in 1932, then came to Princeton, where he got his Ph.D. in economics. His economics career in academé was interrupted to serve in the Navy during WWII. He entered public life in 1948 and was first elected to the House in 1962. Congressman Long had a staunch reputation for zealous constituent service in matters both great and small. He served often on advisory committees for both political parties and took part in the formation of many important pieces of legislation. His first wife, Susanna, predeceased him in 1987. He is survived by his second wife, Pat; a son and a daughter by his first marriage; two stepsons; seven grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren. To all his family, former students, and political friends at home and in Washington, we extend deep sympathy in his passing.
