Claude C. Kelly Jr. ’49

AFTER A SIXYEAR BATTLE with prostate cancer, Claude died Feb. 4, 1994, at his home in Le V6sinet, France. Claude prepared for college at Deerfield Academy. At Princeton, he majored in psychology, was a member of Cloister Inn, worked on THE NASSAU SOVEREIGN, and was a member of the Glee Club and the advertising forum.

Claude served with the 82nd Airborne Division of the army from May 1946Apr. 1947, and returned to graduate with honors in June 1950. Following graduation, Claude served five years in the C.I.A., primarily in Berlin, where he met his wife, Lore. 'Their marriage prompted a recall to Washington, and Claude's decision to resign and become an international lawyer.

He began study at the Univ. of Hamburg in the spring of 1956, then went to Cornell Law School. He graduated from there in 1959. After that, he joined the N.Y.C. office of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen and Hamilton, specializing in international financial law. In 1963, Claude was sent to their Paris office, and he had remained there ever since, enjoying his life and work immensely.

After a cancer operation in Jan. 1988, Claude retired, and he and Lore spent his remaining years between their condo in Nashua, N.H., and their beloved home in France. Our hearts go out to Lore at Claude's passing, and we will always remember him as a most genial and earnest classmate who loved Princeton very much.
