Claude Gortatowsky ’21

Claude Gortatowsky died suddenly on Apr. 16, 1989, within one month of his 91st birthday. He transferred to Princeton after his junior year at UVA. Although he was only with us during our senior year, he had a lifelong fondness for Princeton and was a loyal member of the class.

Claude was associated with the Coca-Cola Co. as a chemist from 1924 until he retired, and was one of the few entrusted with the formula for that company's famous beverage. Claude's hobby was horticulture, and he won many honors at flower shows. He died at his home, in Atlanta, Ga., while tending his rose garden. He was a member of the Princeton Club of New York and several scientific societies and was an emeritus member of the U.S. Committee on Sugar Analysis.

Claude is survived by his wife of 55 years, Harriette, a daughter, and two granddaughters. To them the class extends deepest sympathy.
