Curt Colby ’44
A GENTLE and quietly determined man, Curt Colby died Apr. 22, 1993. He prepared at Pingry and Governor Durnmer, then majored in chemical engineering at Princeton. He was active in the WhigClio and Madison debating societies, managed the soccer team, and was V.P. of Campus Club.
Pursuing a career in chemical engineering, his early work involved research and development, as well as technical service and selling for C. and C. Chemicals, U.S. Rubber, and Foster Grant. When he retired from the field in 1966, he was V.P. of market research and development at Gulf Oil in NYC.
Family was Curt's greatest pride and pleasure. Daughter Lynn was with Vista in Alaska; son Curt III was Princeton '73 and a breaststroke swimming star; daughter Nancy was Colby '75; and loving widow, Helen, was Curt's constant accomplice at annual Alumni Days and Reunions at Princeton.
A new phase of Curt's life began with a mild stroke in Jan. 1976 and a triple bypass in December. Curt thanked God that he had the foresight and desire to return to work two years after his disability, providing a life of "usefulness and lift." With Brandon Rockford Sons in Red Bank, he sold life insurance and did financial planning. Curt never retired.
Curt was founder and honorary chairman of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Monmouth County; a loyal member of the P.A.A. of Monmouth County and its schools committee; and involved in the Annual Giving effort. He was a reunion regular for 30some years. May his family know that '44 misses their gentle husband and father.
