Daniel Evans ’29 *32

Body

DAN DIED Aug. 20, 1994. He was our only Welsh classmate, and prepared at Wallasey Grammar School and Montclair H.S. At Princeton, he was president of the Westminster Society and a member of the debating panel. He had considered the ministry as a career, but went into engineering, his Princeton field of study.

He began work with the American Bridge Co. in Trenton, then returned to Princeton for a C.E. degree. He then went back to Britain, where he worked with Sir Evan Owen Williams in London before entering the colonial service, serving in Nigeria as an engineer. He served until 1954, including six years in Gambia. While in Gambia, he carried out an enormous flood-control project in Bathurst (now Banjul). He returned to Wales in 1954 and worked on various engineering projects until he retired. In 1988, he completed 50 years as a charter member of the Institution of Civil Engineering of London.

In 1938, Dan married Sara Irwin of Washington, Penn., but she died of a tropical disease in Johannesburg in 1943. In 1946, Dan married Bronmai Hughes, who survives, as does their son, Dan Jr., a Ph.D. in Edinburgh with the British Geological Survey. The class extends sincere sympathy to Dan's family.
