Dan died Oct. 13, 2016, in Hobe Sound, Fla., after a distinguished career in the publishing business.

He prepared at Lawrenceville, where he was active in many sports and on the publications board. At Princeton Dan majored in history. As a freshman, he won numerals in soccer, squash, and tennis, and he went on to win letters in squash. Dan also served on the board of The Daily Princetonian and was a member of Colonial Club.

Upon graduation, Dan served in the Navy and took part in the Normandy invasion. After discharge, he began his publishing career at the New York Journal of Commerce. The majority of his career was spent as publisher and editor of the Long Beach (Calif.) Press-Telegram. Dan was a director of the Associated Press and served on its board for nine years. He was also on the board of the Southern California Tennis Association and headed the Los Angeles United Way. Gov. Ronald Reagan appointed him to the board of trustees of the California State College system.

Dan is survived by his wife of 45 years, Frani; his daughter, Randy; sons Daniel and Richard; and three stepchildren, Ellen Miller, Jay Ackerman, and Robin Foley.
