Daniel Kemp Stuckey II ’42

DAN DIED unexpectedly June 8, 1993, in Bangor, Maine. He retired in 1983 from Exeter Academy, where he had served as assistant principal for development and alumni affairs since 1971. Truly a man of letters, Dan devoted his career to teaching, primarily Latin and Greek, and to coaching young athletes.

Dan grew up at Exeter, where his father was on the faculty. After coming to Princeton, he became deeply involved in athletics, captaining both the freshman and the varsity hockey teams, while majoring in classics. He was awarded the Blackwell Cup for "Sportsmanship and Influence in Hockey" and was a member of Tiger Inn.

After serving as a lieutenant on a destroyer for three and a half years during WWII in the Mediterranean, North Atlantic, and Pacific theaters, he taught classics and coached at Hebron Academy before receiving an M.A. from Harvard in 1950. After that he worked for 19 years at St. Paul's, where he was eventually named head of the classics department. He then spent four years as director of athletics at Bowdoin. Dan's distinguished career as an educator was climaxed by his return to Exeter.

Retiring to Castine, Maine (where he had summered for more than 30 years), enabled him to spend more time on his boat. He was past commodore of the Castine Yacht Club and had served on the board of the Castine Community Hospital, among many other probono activities. A dedicated Princetonian (his father, his grandfather, and his three sons attended Princeton), Dan will be missed by all who knew him.

To his widow, Cush (with whom he had just celebrated their 50th anniversary); his three sons, Peter '69, John '72, and Mark '75; and his six grandchildren the class offers its most sincere condolences.
