Daniel died in Princeton, March 2, 2026.

Daniel’s 70 years in Princeton began in 1956 when, after graduating with a B.A. from Westminster College, he entered Princeton Theological Seminary, earning his B.D. in 1959. Daniel was then admitted to Princeton, where he earned a Ph.D. in religion in 1964.

An ordained Presbyterian minister, Daniel began teaching at Princeton Theological Seminary in 1962 as Instructor in New Testament, was elected to the seminary faculty in 1966, and retired in 2009 as the Charles Hodge Professor of Systematic Theology. His administrative responsibilities included serving as director of doctoral studies, chair of the theology department for three terms, and editor of the Princeton Seminary Bulletin.

Daniel was deeply grounded in Reformed theology, especially the theology of Karl Barth. His books include Called to Freedom: Liberation Theology and the Future of Christian Doctrine; The Power of God and the Gods of Power; Philippians and Philemon, and Rachels’ Cry: Prayer of Lament and Rebirth of Hope. His introduction to theology, Faith Seeking Understanding, has been translated into several languages.

Predeceased by his spouse of 57 years, Margaret, Daniel is survived by his spouse Kathleen Billman; daughter Rebecca ’85; son Mark; and grandsons Luca and Matteo.
