Daniel Reid Scally ’53 *55

Body

Dan, who was ranked No. 1 in his group of electrical engineers and went on to receive a master’s degree in engineering at Princeton’s Graduate School before joining TRW Systems for a distinguished career, died Aug. 17, 2009, after a long illness. He had lived in Playa Del Ray, Calif., for the past half-century.

Born in New York City, Dan came from Lincoln High School, took his meals at Cloister Inn, and roomed with Gordon Donald, Tom Inslee, and Fred Crispin. Fred, also an electrical engineer, remembers dutifully studying in his room while Dan, who seemed to have a photographic memory, would be enjoying the movies. Fred recalls Dan’s sense of humor. He was able to climb the ivy clinging outside Holder Hall from the ground to their second floor suite and enter through a window.

Dan moved to California after grad school and was employed for three years with Hughes Aircraft. In 1957 he married Lorna Rennie, who predeceased him. While at TRW Systems, he was committed to the strategic-missile program and later was director of special programs.

Dan is survived by his sons, Reid S. and Glen; brothers Andrew and William; sister Anne Maguire; and one grandson. To them, we offer fond remembrances and give thanks for our departed classmate.
