Body

DAN COX, a retired farmer and biology teacher in The Plains, Va., died on Jan. 18, 1990, at Oak Springs Nursing Home in Warrenton. He attended St. Paul's School in Concord, N.H., spent his freshman year with us at Princeton, and then transferred to M.I.T. He graduated with a degree in naval architecture, and then received a degree in animal husbandry from the Univ. of Maryland.

Dan established his home in The Plains, Va., and worked for the Short Horn Cattle and Breeders Assn. He was a farm manager in Kentucky from the mid-1940s to the mid-1950s, and then moved back to The Plains. He operated a sheep farm and became a biology teacher at the high school in Marshall, Va. He later taught at the Foxcroft School, Middleburg, Va.

He was a member of the Orange County Hunt, and of the Grace Episcopal Church in The Plains. He was an accomplished yachtsman, and in his youth participated in transatlantic sailing races.

Dan married Elizabeth Randolph Turner on Aug. 28, 1940. She survives him, as do a daughter Elizabeth Calvet and two grandchildren.

Dan maintained a loyal interest in Princeton. His widow has said, "Dan loved Princeton and always felt very close to Princetonians." Our sincere sympathy is with Elizabeth and the members of their family.
