Daniel Tuttle Sylvester Hinman ’34
DAN HINMAN, Rhode Island attorney, Army major general, and memorable Prade marshal, died of cancer Nov. 7, 1992. Known to us variously as Deever Dan, Dabook, or just Da, he was an enthusiastic runner and, in spite of his increasing deafness, the life of many a '34 gathering.
After Harvard Law School, Dan practiced in Providence and in and around his home town of Wakefield, until WWII, when he spent 28 months overseas, followed by service on the general staff in the Pentagon. He returned to Rhode Island to command the 385th Infantry Division and became adjutant general and director of civil defense for the state. Before recall to active duty during the Cuba and Viet Nam mobilizations, in 196 1, he commanded the Rhode Island National Guard. Gen. Hinman was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Anita (Fletcher), a Farmington graduate; a daughter, Anne (Mrs. Richard) Howland; a grandson; and two granddaughters. To them we offer our sincere sympathies.
