David Douglas Wicks ’40

THE REALM of secondary education was the centerpiece in the professional life of Dave Wicks, who died unexpectedly at his Westport Point, Mass., home July 7, 1993. Dave was a teacher, coach, housemaster, and headmaster. For 17 years, he taught at Lawrenceville (interrupted by Korean War naval service), where he became dean of students and was active in the advanced placement program. In 1963, he accepted the headmastership of Milton Academy, where he served for ten years, began recruitment o f minority students, and furthered coeducation. Dave then left the academic world to build an addition on his home

in Westport and to work as a contractor. He later returned to Lawrenceville as director of the library.

At Princeton, Dave graduated with high honors in music. He enjoyed ice hockey and Cottage Club. He is survived by his widow, Caroline; daughters Valerie L. Miller, Joan W. Gillette, and Sara W Dey; brother Robert S. '45; and eight grandchildren. To them all the class sends its deepest sympathy and condolences.

A recent Lawrenceville announcement concerning Dave's death stated that "[David's] was a distinguished career, and the greater school community was greatly enhanced by his life even as it is sadly diminished by his death." We add that Dave's life enhanced the stature of Princeton and the Class of 1940 as well.

The Class of 1940
