David L. Dimmock ’52

Dave Dimmock died of cancer in Norwalk, Conn., in July 1987. He had hoped to attend our 35th reunion, but the severity of his illness prevented him from doing so.

Dave is remembered with deep affection and respect as a serious student, as a success in the field of advertising, but perhaps most of all, as a devoted and sensitive friend. At Dave's memorial service, Dick Ellwood '53 observed, "I remember his love of games. . . nothing serious, mostly hearts. Then there was touch football (all year long), or just playing catch. He was particularly thoughtful of my brother, who was retarded. I am fascinated that all of Dimmie's friends' marriages from those days endured. He was my mentor—more than a friend, an advisor and an example."

Dave graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy, majored in economics at Princeton, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He belonged to Cannon Club and was staff announcer at WPRU. After serving in the Navy for two years, during which time he rose to command his patrol boat, Dave began work at Compton Advertising. Some 25 years later, he was a senior V.P., management director, and board member at Compton. In 1981, he became president of a newly formed company, Bradley, Dimmock, and Hungerford.

Dave married Patty Powell in 1958. He is survived by Patty and their children, David L. Jr., Andrew, and Kate. To them we offer our deepest sympathies, as we give thanks for Dave's life and grace.
