David Leland Carter ’49

Body

David died April 30, 2010.

David came to Princeton from Exeter, following his grandfather, Samuel T. Carter Jr. 1886, and his father, Burnham Carter ’22. Prior to Princeton he served as an Army medic stationed in Germany. He was a member of Cannon Club and before his death was ’49’s reunion chair.

After a year as a roustabout in Texas oil fields, David returned to New York City for a career in municipal bonds, retiring as senior vice president for the Government Development Bank for Puerto Rico. He and his wife, Hope, then ran a small business restoring old houses. Retiring again as an accomplished carpenter, he served on the planning board in his hometown of East Amwell, N.J., and was elected to the township council, actively pursuing the preservation of large tracts of farmland and open space.

An enthusiastic sportsman, David enjoyed sailing, tennis, and traveling to exotic climes. He and Hope recently had returned from a sailing charter in the Sea of Cortez.

David is survived by Hope (the daughter of John Hemphill 1915); daughters Ann Carter Lyons and Alantha C. Carter; son Stephen W. Carter; grandchildren David and Lane Mehltretter; a brother, Burnham Carter Jr. ’44; and a sister, Alison Carter Mitchell.
