David M. Amberg ’41
DAVE DIED in Grand Rapids, Mich., the city of his birth, on May 6, 1992. Although he had been in failing health for several years, he continued to display and enjoy his masterful bridge game until nearly the end.
Dave came to Princeton from the Hotchkiss School and became editorinchief of WhigClio's HALLMARK. A member of Court Club, he roomed with Bob Brightman and Bill Jennings, both of whom were also known and feared at the bridge table. Following WVII Army service in the European Theater with captain's rank, he enrolled at Harvard Law School, where he was an editor of the LAW REVIEW. In 1948 Dave returned to Grand Rapids with his degree to practice law in his father's firm but he had been a sole practitioner since 1965. He married Barbara Wilcox in 1950.
Active in the Grand Rapids community, Dave served more than 40 years as trustee of Butterworth Hospital, of which he was secretary and general Counsel. He had been president of the local Urban League chapter and of the civic theater, and was a member of the University Club, the Kent Country Club, and the Fountain Street Church. He was proud that his son John W., now a Los Angeles attorney, was in Princeton's Class of 1974.
In addition to John and his widow, Barbara, Dave is survived by a son Stephen; a daughter Julie; and two grandchildren. Our sympathy goes out to all of them.
