David died of cancer May 27, 2017, in London at age 60.

He was born in Portchester, N.Y. David earned a B.A. in Islamic studies at the University of London in 1979. He received an M.A. in Near Eastern studies at Princeton in 1982, with a focus on early Islamic law.

David earned a J.D. degree from the University of Virginia Law School and joined White & Case, becoming a partner and co-head of the firm’s global telecoms practice.

Preparing to revive a teaching career upon his retirement from the practice of law, David taught courses on Islamic law and finance at UVA and Queen Mary University of London. At the time of his death, he was completing a second edition of Islamic Finance: Law and Practice, which he had published with Oxford University Press in 2012.

David’s philanthropic engagement included the Zoological Society of London and the Institute of Historical Research at the University of London’s School of Advanced Study, where he and his brother endowed a lecture in public history in memory of their parents.

David is survived by his brother Victor and his family, and many friends in the United States and Europe.
