David M. Handel ’56

Body

David Michael Handel died Dec. 11, 1994, in Livingston, N.J. He was 60. David was born in Newark June 13, 1934, and came to Princeton from Columbia H.S. in Maplewood, N.J. While at Princeton, he joined Court Club and majored in philosophy.

While at Princeton, David learned of his affliction with cancer, and he suffered from the effects of his surgical and radiation treatment thereafter. Nevertheless, he pressed on courageously with his life. As he noted in the class’s 25th-reunion book, David was “immersed in a family business since day one.” This business was the Essex Chair Co. in Union, N.J., of which he was the owner and president.

David lived most of his life in South Orange, N.J., where he was a member of the South Mountain Lodge of B’nai Brith. He enjoyed travel and collecting.

David never married, but he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Rhoda Epstein and Mrs. Carol Lax; a brother, Richard; and niece Janet Lax Toledano '74. To them, the class extends its condolences.
