David M. Lewis *52

Body

DAVID MALCOLM LEWIS, a student of Christ Church and a professor of ancient history at the Univ. of Oxford, died of cancer July 12, 1994. He was 66. A native of London and a graduate of the City of London School, he earned his undergraduate degree at Oxford and his Ph.D. in classics at Princeton. He also studied at the Inst. for Advanced Studies in Princeton, the British School in Athens, and at Christ Church College in Oxford.

Dr. Lewis was a profoundly learned scholar in Greek history. His Jewish faith prompted the development of a second area of expertise, Middle Eastern history. He wrote a book, Sparta and Persia, in 1977, and a shorter work, The Jews of Oxford, in 1992. He also edited several Oxford publications in the classics. Dr. Lewis's approach to the study of ancient inscriptions was to use them as a way to understand the ancient world.

He is survived by his widow, Barbara; by four daughters; and by a host of devoted students and colleagues at Oxford. To the all, we extend our sympathy.
