David Mahon Craig ’39
Dave died of heart failure on June 25, 1989, at Shadyside Hospital, in Pittsburgh. A native of that city, Dave spent most of his career there as optical-glass sales manager with PPG Industries. In 1970, he moved to Scranton to join Schott Optical Glass in the same capacity, but when he retired a few years later, he returned to Shadyside. Dave wrote fairly recently that retirement is great, but only if you can have a part-time job (almost any) to occupy your mind. He joined Alcoholics Anonymous in 1969, and since his retirement, he had devoted at least 15 hours a week to it, helping others to help themselves. He was a life member of Calvary Episcopal Church, to which he gave devoted service.
Dave and his first wife, Barbara Pierpont, had two daughters: Tally, a lawyer in Berkeley, Calif., and Susan Laing, a doctor in Salem, Oreg. Dave was proud of them and his two grandchildren. Divorced in 1968, Dave married Jacquilin Robbins in 1973.
Increasingly over the years, Dave treasured not only the classmates he knew in college, but many he came to know. Actually, he entered Princeton with '38 but repeated sophomore year and became a certified '39er, rooming is a suite with Barrett, Bours, Gillespie, Platt, Reis, Turner, and Whipple. He is remembered with affection by us all. With his family we share a sense of loss, and to them we extend our sympathy.
