David Scott Hanson ’40

He prepared at Western Reserve Academy. At Princeton, he majored in politics, was on the 150-pound football team, and was a member of Manager’s Club, the Westminster Society, and Cap and Gown.

During World War II, he achieved the rank of Navy lieutenant commander while serving in the Pacific theater.

After working for Pittsburgh Plate Glass and in management with Ross Builders Supply, Dave was a stockbroker until his retirement in 1983. His quick wit, easy smile, and personal integrity led to recognition of his longtime leadership in Augusta-area business and civic organizations.

Dave’s wife of 64 years, Eleanor “Ellie” Allen, said Dave “really loved his time at Princeton,” trips with his class in Yugoslavia and Australia and down the Danube, and mini-reunions in Florida. He was president of the Princeton Alumni Association of South Carolina as well as chairman of the Schools and Scholarship Committee.

Dave also will be remembered for his love of sailing.

He is survived by Eleanor; sons David Jr., Christopher, and Stephen; daughter Mary Alden Hanson; and six grandsons. To them, his classmates offer their deep sympathies.
