Davis Raff Parker ’49

Body

"ACE" PARKER passed away Dec. 2, 1989, in Gettysburg, Penn., after a massive heart attack.

"Ace," was born on March 30, 1927, and attended University School in Shaker Heights, Oh. He joined the Navy V-12 program in the spring of his senior year, and spent time at the Univ. of Missouri and in Europe. After serving 18 months, he entered Princeton, took time out for a battle with polio, and returned to major in history, graduating in June 1950. He was president of Terrace Club, a member of the Interclub Committee, and on the varsity 150-lb. crew and soccer teams.

In September 1949 Ace married Frances Jane Wykle. Following graduation he returned to University School, taught Latin, French, and history. He earned his masters at Western Reserve Univ., and in 1958 moved to the Milwaukee Univ. School, where he later became head¬master. In 1966 he was named headmaster of the Haver¬ford School. His 20-year tenure saw increases in size of faculty, facilities, the opening of a new library, and dedi¬cation of an arts center.

Ace retired to Gettysburg, which had great appeal for him. "It's a college town," he said, "the National Park Service is there, and I'm something of a Civil War buff." He was an officer of a number of headmaster and inde¬pendent school associations. He was an elder of the Get¬tysburg Presbyterian Church.

In addition to his wife, Jane, his survivors include three daughters, Lynn P. Manning, Elizabeth P. Driscoll, and Catherine P. Lynch, his father, W. Mercier Parker '18, and a brother, Stephen Ely Parker '51. To all of Ace's family we extend our heartfelt sympathy at the loss of this devoted, forthright, principled man who was called away much too soon.
