Dennis Albert Libby *69
DENNIS ALBERT LIBBY *69, distinguished musicologist, scholar, writer, and teacher, died suddenly on July 4, 1989, after a brief illness. He was 50 years old. He received a B.A. degree from Harvard Univ. in 1961 and came to Princeton, where he was awarded a Ph.D. in musicology in 1969. His doctoral dissertation was a study of the operatic writings of Spontini. He taught at several institutions, including Ohio State Univ., Columbia Univ., the Univ. of Southern California, and the Univ. of Michigan. He desired no longterm academic appointments in recent years, but devoted much time to research and study of eighteenth and nineteenth century singers, working at his farm in Maine. Periodically he conducted inspiring seminars and was beginning to publish at the time of his death. Especially significant are his several dozen biographies (in many cases the only ones extant) of eighteenth century singers. These are included in the NEW GROVE'S DICTION~ ARY OF MUSIC AND MUSICIANS, of which he was subeditor. He is survived by his mother, Doris, and his sister, Carol Benvie. To his family members and to his friends, we extend sincere sympathy.
