DENNIS MITCHELL, a foreign service officer with the State Dept. and a It. colonel in the army reserves, died of a heart ailment on June 2, 1993, at his home in Washington, D.C.

Dennis was born in Nov. 1938 in Kittanning, Penn. He grew up in Chevy Chase, Md., and won valedictorian honors at BethesdaChevy Chase H.S. in 1956 and also at Williams College in 1960. At Williams, he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Oxford Univ. (U.K.) he earned a master's degree in English.

The army used his services from 19631967 as an intelligence officer. This included two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was awarded his doctorate in English at Princeton in 1969. Dennis joined the State Dept. in 1977.

Never married, he is survived by his mother, Elizabeth, and a brother, Michael. To his family we wish to express sincere condolences.
