Derek M. Lofquist ’54

Derek died peacefully at his home March 3, 2015.

Born in Orange, N.J., he graduated from the Haverford School. At Princeton, he was an economics major and a member of Tiger Inn, and competed in varsity swimming and golf. His father was a member of the Class of 1921.

After graduation, he enlisted in the Army and served in the Intelligence Corps in Hawaii. After completing his tour of duty, he earned an MBA at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

He began working as a CPA for Price Waterhouse & Co. in San Francisco, where he married Carol Johnson. They had two sons, Derek and Randy. He and Carol divorced 40 years ago, and Derek married Suzanne Bradford in 1981. Their combined family included six children and seven grandchildren.

Derek traveled the world and became the CFO of the San Francisco Zoo, the Rosicrucians, and other nonprofit groups. He was an avid collector of Tibetan and Buddhist iconography and was interested in fly-fishing, history, and philosophy. Derek co-founded an astronomy group and the St. Paul’s Men’s Breakfast Group and was a member of the Sons in Retirement Branch 8. He delighted in the presence of his grandchildren.

The class extends sympathy to Derek’s family and is honored by his service to our country.
