Donald Howard Whitney ’30

Don died March 4, 2009, in Statesboro, Ga.

Born in New York City, he graduated from Horace Mann School and cum laude from Princeton, where he majored in economics and was a member of Cloister Inn.

Don was a portfolio manager and expert in bonds and value analysis. He worked for Chase Securities, a firm ended by the Glass-Steagall Act; Phelps Fenn; Commercial Union Insurance Group, where he was CFO from 1945 until retiring in 1974; and Brown Brothers Harriman, retiring again in 1986. For 57 years until 2002, he managed investments for two private corporations.

Volunteering for World War II, he was turned down due to rheumatoid arthritis. During the war he was director of training at Todd Shipyards in Brooklyn, N.Y.  

Don was a member of the New York Society of Security Analysts, the Bond Club of New York, First Congregational Church in Chappaqua, N.Y., and the New Castle Historical Society. He coached basketball and baseball, worked with the Boy Scouts, served meals to the homeless, collected coins and stamps, and led an investor group.

Don’s wife, Phoebe (Strickland), died in 2001. He is survived by his son, Peter ’65; daughter Mary Whitney Hoch; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. The class extends deepest sympathy to all the family.
