Donald Kemmerer ’27 *34

Body

OUR FINE CLASS PRESIDENT, Dr. Don Kemmerer, died Nov. 19, 1993, after a series of heart attacks. Don came to us from Princeton H.S. At college, he majored in economics, won a Phi Beta Kappa key, and was a member of Arbor Club. After graduation, he studied economics and languages at Harvard, Stanford, and other universities. He received a Ph.D. in history in 1934 from Princeton. He taught economics at Lehigh Univ. from 193437, and history and economics at the Univ. of Illinois until his retirement in 1973. Don wrote numerous books and papers on economics and historical topics, and lectured in France and Germany on Fulbright scholarships. The list of his professional society memberships and writings filled nearly a page in WHO'S WHO IN AMERICA. He traveled to 60 countries, often as a Financial consultant to governments. He was an indefatigable climber, having prepared for this hobby by walking nonstop one night from Princeton to N.Y.C. with classmate Henry Mirick. In 1928, these two climbed the Matterhorn on the same night from separate sides of the peak. Don married Mirjane Strong in 1934 and is survived by her; by a son, Edwin W. 11; a daughter, Jane K. Larsen; rive grandchildren; and two greatgrandchildren. The class extends deep sympathy to them in the loss of a most scholarly, distinguished, and respected classmate.
