Donald N. Brandin ’44
DON BRANDIN DIED in St. Louis Jan. 28, 1994, after a long battle with cancer. He was 72. The class and U.S. banking have lost a man who stood for everything that makes our country great. His rise to national prominence in banking is a superb example of intelligent, aggressive work and goal orientation.
Don joined '44 from Lawrenceville. Commissioned in artillery in Sept. 1943, he took part in the Normandy campaign and later in the battle to liberate Buchenwald. He was discharged as a captain.
He married Yvonne Tetrault in Apr. 1946. In 1956, he moved his family to St. Louis and joined Boatmen's Natl. Bank. In 1973, he took over management at Boatmen's, and increased its assets from $500 million to $15 billion during his tenure.
He was president of Civic Progress, a trustee of Washington Univ., the Saint Louis Art Museum, the Saint Louis Symphony, the United Way, Boy Scouts of America, Y.M.C.A., and the Regional Commerce and Growth Assn. In 1990, St. Louis presented Don with its Levee Stone Award.
Yvonne died in 1981. Marriage to Mary Elliott Keyes (Pitty) in 1982 brought him renewed happiness. When he could, he played golf and enjoyed vacation homes in Colorado and Florida. To Pitty; his sons, Robert and Douglas; daughter, Patricia Barnes; stepdaughter, Elizabeth Keyes White '82; and brother Robert '40, we extend our sympathy.
